abstract (from publication):
The family Diodontidae remains poorly studied, and its diversity in the southwestern Atlantic has been inadequately documented. In this study, all specimens of Diodontidae housed in the National Ichthyological Collection of the Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales Bernardino Rivadavia (MACN) were examined, integrating taxonomic, historical, and curatorial information. Chilomycterus spinosus is the best represented species in the collection and the only one previously recognized as part of the Argentine ichthyofauna. We document the occurrence of Diodon holocanthus along the Argentine coast for the first time. In addition, the revision resulted in an updated catalog of the preserved material, confirmed previous identifications, reassigned specimens based on diagnostic characters, and documented specimens of Chilomycterus spinosus, Chilomycterus reticulatus, Diodon hystrix, and Diodon eydouxii from other regions of the Atlantic Ocean.
