We redescribe Pimelodella straminea, a species widely distributed in endorheic (Salí-Dulce, Primero, and Quinto rivers), and exorheic (Paraná-La Plata and Uruguay rivers) basins of Argentina and Brazil. We analyzed the populations of P. straminea using an iterative taxonomy analysis, which combines a molecular phylogeny based on two mitochondrial genes (COI and CytB), multivariate morphometrics, and coloration patterns. We found a low genetic differentiation of the populations and an overlap of morphometric traits, indicating a single evolutionary unit. We provide comprehensive morphometric, meristic, osteological and molecular data of P. straminea, that is suggested as a senior synonym of P. australis, P. garbei, and P. laticeps.
