The Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, was reported from Samborombón Bay in Buenos Aires, Argentina, as the first record of this invasive species in natural estuarine environments of the country. Here, we reexamine the voucher specimen of that record, MLP-Ict 9770, and update its taxonomic identification. Our analysis demonstrates that the specimen does not belong to O. niloticus, but instead corresponds to Lobotes surinamensis, the Surinam tripletail. Furthermore, the specimen studied is proposed as the first specimenbased record of L. surinamensis in Argentine territorial waters.
